Welcome to the December issue of the Barrita newsletter. The last issue was despatched from the airport in Perth where Sarah and I had spent the weekend at the Western Australian Fiction Festival. Sarah was one of the featured authors at this event and I had the experience of being the authors assistant for the weekend.
The bizarre flowering season meant that I had extra time to get the hybridizing completed. This is not as simple as flicking pollen around. To make crosses that steer this wonderful genus in a direction of true improvement, it takes about a week to get through the many colour styles we are pursuing. This process includes photographing and giving a code number to all our parent plants and studying the pedigrees of prospective parents, as I like to bring different breeding lines together. This year we added 57 new parents to our breeding program. While there are now over 300 plants on our breeding bench, not all are used every year. Our crosses are made to build our ideal Sarcochilus and as new crosses flower, the next generations path unfolds.

Update on the stripped ‘tortured’ Cymbidiums
It has now been 3 months since these plants were stripped for absolute maximum leaf removal.

As you can see, the new leads are coming up very straight. This is because they have better light exposure, and don’t need to lean out to find the light.

We love to hear from you, our customers. If you have questions that need answering or photos of your flowers you'd like to show off, please send them to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will feature a selection of what we receive.
Potting up a Sarcochilus
One of the key features of our media is that it does not need to be changed at repotting. While it does have a tendency to fall out of the roots when transferring from the tube to 100mm pot, at the next move the root ball stays intact and the process is much smoother. eBay Sale of Sarcochilus Divisions and Special plants

This cross calculates out at 78% S. hartmannii (Orchidwiz). Looks closer to 95% to me. The flared side lobes of the lip can be attributed to S. fitzgeraldii. All the same, great flower and Congratulations Rob.
Our Epidendrums have been very popular since we came online. We will be releasing a new batch in the early part of next year. One of the most exciting aspects of these epi’s is their ability to flower. As you can see from the pictures, we’re getting lots of spikes from very small plants. Though a plant of this size really shouldn’t flower (there is not enough energy stored in the bulb to push out the flower to its full potential), I still like to see it, and am really looking forward to them maturing and showing off the vibrant colours and good size flowers that first attracted me to them. Spring Sarc flasks
Spring is a great time to deflask and with the delayed start to spring we have a specially selected range of hybrids to offer those who prefer to take out now. For those of you who like to deflask in the Autumn, we will have another release of flasks at that time. Click here to view the flask range.
We have a strong growing strain of this wonderful species in our nursery, and we thought it was time to share the joy with you. It loves the same conditions as our Sarcochilus and flowers throughout the mid-Summer months.
